Sketches from times past.

Haven’t done anything here in a while, so I’ve decided to transform this blog into a fun place to put my art. This shall include, and though is not limited to comics, animation and basic sketchbook dumps. Alright, lets place some catch up and get this thing updated. What follows are old sketches. Here to get us started…

Just a simple one page comic.  Enjoy.

Disclaimer* (also an introduction)

January 27, 2010

Ok so since I haven’t actually attended the class and am merely auditing it I guess I misunderstood the whole concept of the first blog post. I suppose I cannot actually write about the first day of class due to my absence, but I can at least introduce myself and such so that I’m not completely out of the loop. (That is assuming you lot did introduction on the first day)

Ok so my name is Joe which by now you have figured out (you smart bunch of class you). I am an art student currently focusing on drawing and painting and have a deep seated interest in comics. I am not much of a writer which is why I am trying to take this class however it happens to exist at the same time as a required drawing class so I had to take the responsible path and audit this class instead. I’m kinda bummed because from reading these blogs it seems like I’m missing out on a sweet class and you all seem to be like minded individuals which makes sense due to it being a comic class. Anywho, back to this whole about me thing; I have some experience in making comics including one you lot may actually read (it’s in the UWM Post) and am currently working on getting some stuff published. I am taking the class to become a better writer in the hope that I can one day create my own comics without having to rely on a writer. Um…yes, think that about covers the majority of my background as far as this class is concerned. If you lot have any questions…well thats what the comments section is for.

A Comic Understanding

January 26, 2010

Alright, so to put it plainly this blog is for a comic writing course I am auditing. It can be assumed the topics of my posts shall be dealing primarily in comics so, that’s nice.

Any who, my first topic of discussion I think is to deal with the whole concept of what a comic is and it’s function. Comic creator and godhead of defining comics  Scott McCloud explains that comics or “sequential art” as Eisner refers to it,  are composed of “images juxtaposed in deliberate sequence in order to convey an idea and/or an aesthetic response”(Understanding Comics, McCloud). That is to say that comics consist of a series of images placed in a specific order in order to convey an idea, much like film does albeit at a much quicker pace and with many many more frames. Comics are something of an amalgamation of literature, films and modern art;  containing elements of all to create an completely new and highly flexible medium. Several types of comics in the world to consider, from the conventional comic strip found in newspapers, single issue comic books; often times comic books are collected into large volumes which are hereafter known as graphic novels. Finally there are web comics, a burgeoning new way to display the medium in new and exciting ways. I will expand on each of these types of comics over the course of the blog I’m sure, but as for now I shall leave it at that.

Cheers.
